Canada's front-of-package (FOP) nutrition symbol is required on most prepackaged beverages that meet specified levels of sugars, saturated fat or sodium. Since January 1, 2026, qualifying new imports must carry the prescribed symbol on the retail label. Canadian buyers should assess each finished formula and package before approving artwork. This applies to imported juice, coconut water and sweetened beverages, subject to the regulatory exemptions. CFIA — FOP requirements
1. Confirm the rule and the importer’s responsibility
Under section B.01.350 of Canada's Food and Drug Regulations (FDR), most consumer-prepackaged foods need the symbol if at least one nutrient of concern reaches the applicable threshold. The Canadian importer or brand owner should approve local compliance, while the Vietnamese manufacturer supplies reliable formulation, nutritional and packaging information. FDR, B.01.350
The transition period ended December 31, 2025. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) states there is no general enforcement discretion after January 1, 2026. Stock imported, manufactured in Canada or packaged at retail before that date may continue to be sold, but new imports are assessed under the current rules. CFIA — November 17, 2025 notice
