For Vietnamese beverages containing aloe vera, basil seeds or prebiotic fibre, access to the European Union (EU) depends on the exact ingredient, preparation and intended use, not the product name alone. The Vietnamese manufacturer supplies specifications and processing evidence. The EU importer checks ingredient status, relevant restrictions and labelling before marketing. This guide covers EU destination rules, not export formalities in Vietnam.
Identify the ingredient before assessing its status
Start with the scientific name, plant part, physical form and manufacturing process. "Aloe vera" may mean inner-leaf gel, leaf extract or another preparation. Whole Ocimum basilicum seeds are not interchangeable with other seeds or basil extracts. "Prebiotic" describes an intended function, not a single legally defined ingredient.
The supplier should state the actual ingredient source, extraction or purification steps, concentration in the finished drink and intended serving size. Request specifications for compound ingredients. A status finding for one botanical preparation does not automatically extend to a different extract, processing method or food use.
Check the EU novel-food route
Under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, food businesses must establish whether an ingredient falls within the novel-food rules. A key test is significant human consumption in the EU before 15 May 1997, subject to the regulation's categories and exceptions. An ingredient already authorised as a novel food may be used only within its applicable listing conditions.
Use the European Commission's Novel Food status Catalogue for initial orientation, then check the Union list of authorised novel foods. The Catalogue is non-binding and non-exhaustive. Its silence is not an approval, and a listing for food supplements does not necessarily cover beverages.
If the status remains uncertain, the business operator can consult the competent authority in the EU country where the ingredient will first be marketed. Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/456 specifies the consultation dossier and process.
